Sunset Crater Volcano Star Party

This weekend come and stay at El Portal Sedona Hotel and play at the Sunset Crater Volcano Party! The National Monument is just over an hour’s drive from Sedona. At this pet friendly Sedona hotel we will pet sit for free as pets are only allowed in the parking lot and must be leashed at all times; they are NOT allowed on any trails or in any buildings. So leave Fido with us, he will be watered, walked and fed and you can take in all the Sunset Crater Volcano has to offer worry-free!
About 900 years ago the eruption of Sunset Crater Volcano destroyed all plants within a 5-mile radius. A fountain of fire, 850 feet high, was visible for miles around. An ash cloud rose 2.5 miles into the sky, and falling ash covered about 64,000 acres.

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument will offer day time solar activities, interpretive programs and night sky telescope viewing for families on  Saturday, July 14, 2012.

Day time activities will take place at the Sunset Crater Volcano Visitor Center. Night sky ranger programs and telescope viewing will take place at the Lava Flow Trail parking lot.

All night activities and ranger programs are free. There is an entrance fee for the day time activities of $5.00/person 16 and older. (America the Beautiful passes are accepted and will be sold).

Saturday July 14 Activities

  • 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – Solar telescope viewing at the Sunset Crater Volcano Visitor Center.
  • 7:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – “Observational Astronomy” power point presentation.  Learn about the night sky and how best to view the stars, at Lava Flow Trail parking lot at Sunset Crater Volcano.
  • 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. – View the stars, planets, and the Milky Way through telescopes (you can even bring your own telescope to set up if you prefer). At Lava Flow Trail parking lot at Sunset Crater Volcano.

Did you know? Our night vision is very sensitive to white light. For any night time event, try using a red-light flashlight, you will be amazed at how many more stars you will be able to see.  (To make a red-light flashlight just cover an ordinary flashlight in red cellophane).
