“Home Away From Home!” (Reviewed December 24, 2011)

We’re just back from three wintery nights at El Portal, and are already planning our next trip back. It’s not Sedona that lures us back, it’s the Inn itself. Steve and Connie Segner have a very special thing going at El Portal. Perfectly located right near the center of the town’s “triad” layout, but tucked away as a private oasis from the tourists and traffic, a stay at El Portal feels much more like staying with old friends than it does a hotel. The “lobby” of the Inn is actually more like a living room, where you can check in, have fresh coffee, and chat with the guests (who, given the “quirks” of this place, are likely to be warm, open-minded, interesting people who eschew the preciousness and sterility of the chain resorts). This common space is also where delicious breakfast is served in the morning, where kids might quietly play board games, and where the dogs brought by the guests hang out and warm up when it’s cold outside. The dogs, the laughter, the wine, the games — all on top of gorgeous antique Arts & Crafts-era furniture, personally curated by Steve, whose passion for and knowledge of the period only lends him to encourage his guests to use and enjoy the surroundings he’s so generously chosen to appoint the Inn.
The rooms are lovely. Quiet, well-appointed with beautiful antique lamps and furniture, some with balconies. Ours was upstairs and overlooked a central courtyard which, despite the 20 degree weather, had a firepit lit much of the day and into the evening, lest somebody might like to sit outside. Inside the fire went all day as well, where anyone passing through can ask Steve, Connie, Terrie or Fran anytime about the area, and get a well-informed answer.
If you’re looking for bellhops, room service, large tvs and valet parking, this place isn’t for you. El Portal is for the self sufficient traveler who enjoys the occasional or ad hoc fellowship of other adventurers, but who likewise appreciates the finer things in life. “Hidden Gem in Sedona” (Reviewed January 2, 2012)

What a wonderful place! My husband and I took our dogs to Sedona between Christmas and New Year’s and couldn’t have picked a better place. Truly a great find in a fabulous location in Sedona. You couldn’t ask for nicer people. The owners of the property, staff and guests really made you feel welcome and at home. Location wise, you couldn’t ask for a better spot. Walking distance to shopping and dining (casual and fine dining). This is a really quaint property with unique characteristics in every room and so much personalized detail. We loved it so much; we already booked another stay and are returning in the spring. If you have well mannered dogs of any size or just want a romantic stay with your sweetie this is the place to stay! (AZSunDevilFan, Phoenix, AZ)

Room Tip: Best rooms for larger dogs are rooms 4-7, nice private yards (4 & 7 specifically). Best couple’s retreat rooms are 10-12. (Stayed December 2011, traveled as a couple)

“It was a wonder place to stay” (Reviewed January 12, 2012)

We travel with three small dogs. It is hard to find a place that take dogs, let alone 3 dogs. We found this gem in Sedona. They do not just take dogs but they took our three dogs and there was no charge for them. The hotel is a very comfortable, roomy and well appointed. Steve and the staff were very attentive to our needs and the breakfasts were great. We will be back again.  (William271, Indio, CA). (Stayed January 2012, traveled as a couple).

“Sedona’s most luxurious and dog friendly inn!” (Reviewed February 15, 2012 )

We stayed in the Governor’s Suite with our 2 sons, and dog, breathtaking views from the master suite. Loved the steam shower, and Bain Ultra air bubble tub in the bath! Enjoyed the fireplace in the living area, and lovely antique furniture. This luxury inn was built by master craftsmen, 18 inch plaster walls, and solid wood crafted doors. Each room was designed with a special theme, with beautiful arts and crafts furnishings. The lobby was cozy and comfortable, with its warm fireplace, Stickley dining area, and impressive custom chandelier. Location was fantastic, right in Tlaquepaque Plaza. The owners were super nice and took great pride building this inn. (karigirl, Los Angeles, CA).

Room Tip: Highly recommend Governors suite for family, master suite had thick solid sliding doors for privacy. (Stayed December 2011, traveled with family).

Here are a few tips from El Portal Sedona Hotel to help you out:

1. Make a plan: what are you looking for – a caterer? Florist? Make a list of questions too. Bring a notebook; write down your questions BEFORE you go.
2. Follow the plan. Don’t get side tracked with all the “free” stuff.
3. Bring a calendar to make appointments.
4. Bring a bag for samples, brochures, etc.
5. Go through the entire show. Make notes of the vendors you want to see. Compare it to the list you made. Now go to the vendors you want to visit.
6. Ask your questions, vendors are busy, be specific. If you’re comfortable, make an appointment. There is usually some “special” if the appointment is made at the show. You can even ask what their “show special” is and take advantage of it!
7. If you do go to the runway show and see a dress, make a note of it. The dress vendor is usually at the show. Go to their booth tell them the dresses you like, find out how much they are and make an appointment.   Ask them when they have their “Trunk Shows”; you can save a lot of money!  Find out if they have any sales, sample sales, or clearance.
8. Don’t forget to wear comfy shoes!

Arnaud Sussmann is quickly establishing a reputation as a multi talented and compelling artist, earning the highest praise from both critics and audiences alike. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from The Julliard School, studying with Itzhak Perlman who chose him to be a Starling Fellow. Arnaud visited Sedona in October as part of Paul Neubauer’s Mozart Project hosted by Chamber Music Sedona. He joins Verde Valley Sinfonietta as our featured soloist for the Arizona Centennial Concerts.

AZ Constitutional Convention – You are There, Radio Theater Show

When: Feb 11 – 12, 2012

Where: Sedona Heritage Museum, 735 Jordan Road, Sedona (map)

Description: This is a  Radio Theater style presentation re-enacting some moments, debates, personalities, humor and drama of Arizona’s constitutional convention. It is an original show based on historical research. There will be audience participation, decor of the era, and refreshments. Radio Theater is a form of audio storytelling with minimal visual components. The listener imagines the story through dialogue, music and sound effects. Tickets $7/adult, $4/youth, children under 6 free. Organizer: Sedona Heritage Museum.

Verde Canyon Railroad Centennial Celebration – 100 Years of Railroading

When: Feb 11 – 12, 2012

Where: Verde Canyon Railroad Train Depot, 300 N. Broadway Clarkdale (map)

Description: This Centennial Celebration is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and is free to the public. The train departs each day at 2 p.m. and requires a ticket purchase. Verde Canyon Railroad’s knowledgeable staff will take visitors on a complimentary 20-minute tour of their vintage engines, only two of 10 remaining in North America; through the mid-last century passenger cars which once linked America coast to coast, and on a tour of the John Bell Museum which highlights the Railroad’s storied past. New to the depot is the special event’s tent, where free exhibitions celebrating the Verde Valley will be on display. Agriculture, history, wildlife conservation and Native American cultures will be represented. Area attractions and local artisans will round out the morning venue, along with breakfast and lunch available for purchase. Organizer: Verde Canyon Railroad.

AZ Centennial Splatter Dab Breakfast

When: Sunday, Feb 12, 2012

Description: A breakfast event honoring descendants of families who were living in the Sedona area and/or Arizona in 1912. Program, music, dignitaries, this is a ceremony honoring Arizona pioneers. Organizer: Sedona Heritage Museum.

The Heart of Arizona

When: Sunday, Feb 12, 2012

Where: Yavapai College Performance Hall – 1100 E Sheldon St, Prescott (map)

Description: This is concert three (3) of the 2011-12 season. This concert is titled “The Heart of Arizona” in honor of the Centennial. The symphony is commissioning a musical selection by Henry Flurry in recognition of the event. Additionally, the symphony will perform the Sy Brannon piece commissioned by the state. The concert will also feature the beloved Toni Tennille. Both composers will be in attendance. The conductor is Paul Manz. Organizer: Prescott POPS Symphony. Traveling the Cowboy Trail: 100 Years of Arizona Tales

When: Sunday, Feb 12, 2012

Where: Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library – 300 W. Aspen Avenue, Flagstaff, Arizona 86001 (map)

Description: Cowboy entertainers will play music, tell stories and read cowboy poetry in celebration of Arizona and the centennial. Tony Norris is a veteran of the cowboy music and poetry festivals. He has appeared on the stages of the National cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, The Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso, New Mexico and The Arizona Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Prescott, Arizona. Organizer: Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library.

“The research for this exhibit was a fascinating opportunity,” says exhibit curator, Janeen Trevillyan.  “We found local diary entries about circa 1912 voting and daily life, the list of local registered voters in 1910 and 1912, and, of course learned tidbits of that helped shape a picture of life in Arizona and the Verde Valley as our residents struggled with divisive constitutional issues and a very rural population.” (From Sedona.biz)
